The intention of this journal entry is to provide an appraisal of my involvement with the Dal’yth Irregulars [In accordance with the request for a census of irregular guard regiments operating in the Ultima Segmentum’s eastern sector], and an overview of my activities and intentions to date [In relation to my recent “Whereabouts Unknown” status].
To begin; my long-standing association with the regiment known as the Dal’yth Irregulars came shortly after their founding c.742-743.M41 as described in the cross-referenced file.
My presence in the eastern marches of the Ultima Segmentum had originally been directed by the Emperor’s tarot, which suggested a dawning daemonic threat in the locale that was to become the focus of the Damocles Gulf Crusade. Unfortunately, due to the inherently problematic nature of travel across the Empyrean, my contingent arrived at the initial staging post for the expedition after it had not only shipped out to engage the newly discovered Tau Empire, but summarily returned in defeat.
In addition to this irksome predicament, which placed my intended objective off-limits, I found myself pressed by the necessities of aiding Inquisitorial forces purging Genestealer cults in the outlying systems of the south-eastern fringe. This task would have been more naturally undertaken by the agents of the Ordo Xenos or Hereticus, but with the scale of the threat to the Imperium uncovered by Inquisitor Kryptman’s discovery of the Tyranid Hive-Fleets, their links with the aforementioned cult activity, and the subsequently bitter struggle to hold our borders, forces were understandably spread thin and many of my colleagues found themselves somewhat astray of their vocations.
It was during this period that I requisitioned the Dal’yth Irregulars to fulfil my own needs for a standing force of combat-experienced troops, having found my own small retinue of Inquisitorial Stormtroopers to be insufficient for the task at hand [By no means a condemnation of their martial prowess]. Whilst it is well within my purview to commandeer whatever forces necessary in the fulfilment of my duties, it always creates unnecessary problems to pick and choose the most ideal platoons from the locally available guard regiments, as many commanders perceive it as a plundering or poaching of their most valuable assets [Particularly with the possibility of said assets never being returned…].
The Dal’yth Irregulars provided the ideal solution, allowing me access to three platoons, each with very unique skills, but already moulded into one fighting force comprised of men who had already served together and seen considerable action as a unified entity.
My decision to acquire them also made it unnecessary to requisition further heavy support, as the Irregulars had been assigned the remnants of a sentinel squadron, as well as the sole surviving unit from a regiment of Leman Russ battle tanks. Concern for inter-platoon discipline on the part of high command also provided me with an unexpectedly large contingent from the Imperial Commissariat. In retrospect, I believe that the post-crusade command staff were relieved to be rid of such an apparent mish-mash of troops [blessed are all those who fight in the Emperor’s name though, be they ever so humble!].
Moving on however, despite these boons my earlier misfortune with the Empyrean continued, and on several occasions during the course my investigations my forces suffered near-catastrophic transit problems, which led to us suffering from serious time-distortion effects. This contributes in no small part to the fact that the roster for the Dal’yth Irregulars remains virtually unchanged since c.742-743.M41, with all the original commanding officers having survived to the present day.
The passage of years has had some unique advantages though, illuminating the hints provided me by my original divinations with the Emperor’s tarot. I would direct you at this point to Imperial Record EST 02/8301 Inquisitoria 8953/3932 cleared by Inquisitor Artelles in 6284996.M41 and concerning the Tau Fire Caste Commander “Farsight” or “O’Shovah”.
It has been subsequently suggested that the artefact world referred to in these files is Arthas Moloch, and I have personally come into possession of several [purportedly] “eye-witness” accounts, which lend credence to the idea that this Tau Renegade has come into possession of a corrupted weapon of some description, his contact with it resulting in the schism that has developed between the Farsight Enclaves and the Tau Empire proper.
The Tau have already proved a thorn in the side of the Imperium and were grossly under-estimated during the initial Damocles Gulf Crusade. Such continued complacency two centuries on could be deadly if this already dangerous civilisation were allowed to fall from within to the machinations of the Great Enemy.
Whilst the Tau should most certainly be cleansed at the earliest available opportunity, at the moment the policy of containment and punitive expeditions to maintain quarantine would seem the most viable method available, particularly in light of the depredations of the Tyranid Hive Fleets and the sheer amount of resources tied up in their counter-action.
The issue of this renegade faction however, cannot be dealt with so lightly. The Tau may be allowed to continue for the moment in their ‘untainted’ state, for as such they pose no real threat to the Imperium [if treated with the appropriate degree of caution], but I am loathed to treat this “O’Shovah” with the same attitude…
To this end, it is my intention to lead an expedition through the Damocles Gulf, to Arthas Moloch to see this artefact world first hand and ascertain the potential threat; to begin in earnest, the investigations I had intended to lead, over two centuries passed.
God-Emperor willing,
